Serial Communication

Use this window to control the Serial Communication options.

NOTE: This help page may include information about features and values not supported by your system. Server Administrator only displays the features and values that are supported on your system.

Serial Communication

Enables or disables the serial communication devices (Serial Device 1 and Serial Device 2) in BIOS.

On without Console Redirection	Selects whether the serial communication device is enabled in BIOS or not. This field also turns on BIOS console redirection and determines which port address would be used. (COM1=0x3F8, COM2=0x2F8).
On with Console Redirection via COM1 or COM2	Selects whether the COM port is enabled by the BIOS and if BIOS Console Redirection is also enabled. Please see the User's Guide for the various operating modes available.
Off	Disables the serial communication devices (Serial Device 1 and Serial Device 2) in BIOS.

Serial Port Address

Sets the port address for the Serial Devices. (COM1=0x3F8, COM2=0x2F8)

NOTE: Only Serial Device 2 can be used for Serial Over LAN (SOL). To get Console Redirection via SOL, configure the same port address for Console Redirection and Serial Device.

External Serial Connector

Associates the External Serial Connector to Serial Device 1, Serial Device 2, or the Remote Access Device.

NOTE: Only Serial Device 2 can be used for Serial Over LAN. Configuring the External Serial Connector to Serial Device 1 allows independent use of Serial Device 1 while Serial Device 2 can be used for Serial Over LAN. For more information on the various operating modes available, see the Dell OpenMange Server Administrator User's Guide.

Failsafe Baud Rate

The BIOS attempts to determine the baud rate automatically. This failsafe baud rate is used only if the attempt fails.

Remote Terminal Type

Sets your remote console's terminal type. The <Ctrl><Alt><Del> key sequence is mapped to <ESC>+<R>+<ESC>+<r>+<ESC>+<R> on the Terminal. The <Ctrl>+<H>, <Ctrl>+<I>, <Ctrl>+<J>, <Ctrl>+<M> key sequences are mapped to <ESC>+<Ctrl>+<H>, <ESC>+<Ctrl>+<I>, <ESC>+<Ctrl>+<J>, <ESC>+<Ctrl>+<M> on the Terminal. <Alt>+<x> key sequences are mapped to <ESC>+<X>+<X> on the Terminal, where x is any letter key, and X is the upper case of that key.

Redirection After Boot

Sets the BIOS console redirection to enable or disable when the operating system is loaded.

Other Window Controls

	Prints a copy of the open window to your default printer.
	Saves a text file containing the contents of this window (the values of each data field separated by a customizable delimiter) to a destination you specify.
	E-mails the contents of this window to your designated recipient. See the Server Administrator User's Guide for instructions about configuring your Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server.
	Updates the screen with latest information.
	Displays the online help for this page.
